The WBRS Spring ProgramAs Business Manager, I am responsible for pursuing sponsorship for WBRS. Since we are a non-profit and commercial-free organization, we are unable to rely on paid advertising to fund our needs. Without the help of our sponsors, WBRS would not survive. Sponsorship, or underwriting, is vital to the daily operations around here. The support of our sponsors helps us to afford the major technical repairs that inevitably surface every year.
Our transmitter and antenna received a complete overhaul last fall, so WBRS can once again be heard in the farthest reaches of Boston. Had it not been for the support of our sponsors, the cost of the repairs would have depleted our funds.
Although we are generously supported by the students of Brandeis University, the monetary demands of keeping a radio station running and its equipment working are too high to rely soley on funding from the university.
Our sponsors provide more than just funds to pay for repairs. They provide an association with the community outside of Brandeis. Since we broadcast well beyond the confines of the campus, it is crucial that we maintain a positive and productive relationship with our entire listening area. WBRS values the donations it receives every year from those who appreciate the importance of the forum that an all-genre, non-commercial college radio station provides: the opportunity for artists who would otherwise have no means by which to reach a wide audience.
This year, I've been concentrating on updating our mailing list, with the hopes that we might cut our mailing costs by 15-20%. WBRS is proud to consistently produce quality Program Guides and play lists that we distribute worldwide. Our mailing list now runs on a brand new database which will make updating simple. The overwhelming response of reply cards that we got back over the winter has allowed us to correct a substantial amount of sorely outdated address information, as well as establish an e-mail distribution list which we will use to send out listings of upcoming WBRS events, such as our Joint and Coffeehouse schedules, as well as our biannual play lists. More e-mail, less paper and may we all live happily ever after.
Seriously folks, everyone should sponsor WBRS.
